Loops return to one side
A loop enters from one side, recurs, and exits from the same side. The direction is named by the bone side it opens toward, so plain ridge direction matters more than the label in the choices.
Whorls revolve around a center
A whorl has a circular or spiral impression with two deltas. When the stem gives two deltas or a central recurve, test whorl first before considering a loop.
Arches rise and leave
An arch enters one side, rises in the center, and exits the other side without recurving. Tented arches rise sharply, but they still do not become loops without a recurve.
